Beers & Wines of Andalucia

Beers

Spain is Europe's fourth largest producer of lager type beers (cerveza) and deservedly so as the drink is exceedingly popular across the whole of the country. Due to Andalucias' consitently hot climate the cold, refreshing drinks are a part of daily life and most Andalucians would happily drive home after more than a few glasses. Bars in Andalucia generally serve draught beers in small glasses (cañas) or a long, thin glasses (tubos) with the most popular brands being listed below:

Cruzcampo

Owned by Heineken since 1991, Cruzcampo is, by far, the biggest selling brand in Spain and one of the highest in Europe. The company was formed by two brothers in 1904 and the beer is named after a stone cross, La Cruz del Campo, where the first brewery was located. Today the beer is brewed elsewhere in Andalucia: namely Jaen and, recently, Seville.

San Miguel

San Miguel was originally brewed by monks in the San Miguel region of Manila in the Philippines and was brought to Spain by an enterprising businessman who bought the rights to the brand in 1957. The company has a 30% share of the Spanish market and is now a part of the Grupo Mahou-San Miguel.

Alhambra

Originating in Granada in 1925, this beer is brewed by Cervezas Alhambra SL which is, as San Miguel above, a part of the Grupo Mahou-San Miguel company. Originally the first indepentand brewer in Andalucia, it is based in Cordoba and produces more than 1.4 million cans of their drinks per day.
